Case Study: Athens Power Station

Located in Greene County, New York, this 1080 MW combined cycle plant has 3x120 MW steam turbines (axial exhaust). The plant was placed into commercial operation in 2003.

To meet cold weather, low noise and other considerations, this plant features three ACC systems comprised of 18 cells each. They have 3x6 configurations and were constructed in a contiguous arrangement, giving the appearance of a single system.

This design met or exceeded the following criteria:

  • single row condensing technology
  • hot air recirculation barriers between ACC units
  • ACC height limitations
  • plot constraints
  • cold weather/freeze protection (-28º F)
  • low noise level
  • 7 ppb oxygen content level (deaeration required)
  • long, large diameter duct runs
  • turnkey contract (mechanical erection included)
  • limited laydown
